Garnering new clients is one of the most important aspects of marketing. The pitch is an imperative part of gaining new clients. There are a variety of ways a pitch can go wrong, so you need to know the do’s and don’ts of delivering a pitch.
- The first thing to do is keep your appearance reflective of how you want to be perceived. This does not just mean keeping your hair quaffed and clothes ironed; this also means dressing for your audience to make sure they do not feel overwhelmed as soon as you walk through the door.
- The most important part of a pitch is the beginning. You need to lead with the most important information, while also grabbing their attention with an interesting hook. Within the first minute or so, you are most nervous, so you need to focus on being confident during the lead and then the rest will follow.
- When you’re trying to persuade a client that you are the best person to serve their company’s needs, you need to paint them a visual picture. Not everyone knows the technical jargon of digital marketing, so you need to give them a broad idea. Just as Van Gogh painted pictures with paint brushes and a palette, we need to paint pictures with our words and ideas.
- You may think you need to give your potential clients as much information as possible because you think they want to know everything you’re hoping to do. In actuality, you want to make your message short and sweet. If you’re successful, you will have intrigued them enough that they will ask questions to gain more information, instead of you forcing it on them.
- Finally, make sure you keep control of the conversation. If you don’t, the topic of conversation could veer into something you do not understand as well, and this could be your downfall. So, as Don Draper always says, “If you don’t like what they’re saying, change the conversation.”
- If you use your hands too much while talking, it will distract those you are talking to from what you are saying and instead force them to focus on your hand movement.
- Do NOT look at your phone for any reason. It doesn’t matter if it dings, rings or sings. It will make you look unprofessional and as if you care more about what’s on your phone than their business. Either turn it off or put it away until the end of the meeting.
- Don’t fidget. It makes you look nervous and as if you don’t know what you’re talking about. It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting or standing, keep your posture and form steady, to present yourself with professionalism and confidence.
- Avoid back-talking. Using phrases such as “You know what I mean” and “What I was trying to imply”. It’ll just force the client to focus on your little mistake instead of everything else you’d given them up to that point.
- Finally, do not dominate the conversation. Be confident and be able to change the conversation if you need to, but after your pitch, allow them to ask their questions and converse with you, instead of you just speaking at them.
