Whether it’s the latest Walker Hayes song, dancing his way to Applebee’s, or a dog jumping into a pile of leaves, TikTok has content for just about anything. It’s also addicting. I resisted the urge to join TikTok for quite some time but caved a few months ago. I haven’t been brave enough to post any of my own videos yet. However, I may or may not have a few dances down pat.

It’s not just Millennials and Gen-Z that upload content — Baby Boomers and Gen-X users have also ventured onto the platform. Even businesses are throwing their hats into the ring, not that I blame them. With over 100 million active TikTok users in the United States each month, it would be crazy not to learn the ins and outs of the interactive platform.

You might be thinking, “Jen, why TikTok? We already have content on other platforms.” Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn (on the business side) are widely used platforms. With the growing popularity of TikTok, I believe it is worth a try for a few reasons.

1. Influencers

We all know that being an “influencer” in the social media world has taken off, especially on platforms like Instagram and Twitter. Well, the same concept can be applied to TikTok. According to TikTok, 70% of users expect the platform to “inspire them” into making a purchase this holiday season. It’s not just the influencers that have a working relationship with certain brands that can make a difference here. It can be the mom who raves about a certain product that has made her life easier, or it can come from a satisfied client who utilized the services of a business.

It is the real experiences and interactions between a viewer and the person behind the camera that make a difference. As a mom and a wife, it can be hard keeping my house organized and not looking like a scene straight out of Twister. I follow a few accounts on TikTok where the person cleans using certain products or gives helpful hints to organize more efficiently. I have jumped on the bandwagon with a few things and it has helped. Another example might be the number of cooking videos out there. Many recipes found on TikTok have gone viral.

As a consumer of any kind of business, I want to see how a product or service will improve what I’m doing. Just like a written testimonial about your business, a video review of your product or service would be helpful to others.

2. Visuals

Written text has been the mainstay of communication for a very long time. However, there has been a shift in using video in marketing as well as everyday communication. Users are more likely to watch a video to gain information than to read a long text.

Visuals appeal to our senses more than written text. Your sight can take in all of the movement and colors, while your hearing processes any audio that accompanies the videos. Both of these senses together, make a video more likely to grab your attention than basic text.

3. Reach

There are over 4 billion active users on social media worldwide. While in the United States, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn are the most widely used social media platforms, TikTok’s fan base is growing rapidly. The average person spends 21.5 hours a month on TikTok, which is mind-blowing, but I can see how.

It’s easy to scroll through one video to another and lose track of time. Yes, it’s another platform to create content for. However, if millions of users are spending that amount of time watching monthly, there is a good chance of your content being noticed.

4. Creativity

This is probably the most enjoyable reason. This is a great opportunity to put your business on the map in a creative way. While some TikTok videos can be serious, they can also be fun and informative. Setting yourself apart from the competition is certainly not a bad thing. Thinking outside the box can increase your chances of having a viral video. Not all videos go viral, but it is worth a try!

Keeping up with the Trends

These are just a few of the reasons why I feel that TikTok could be a good idea for marketing your business, in addition to the other platforms, of course. With how rapidly the platform is growing across many audiences, it is definitely worth a look.
