Throughout life, we’re always creating a plan for ourselves, a timeline or a to-do list. A lot of us are able to stick to the script we’ve written for ourselves, but what happens when you don’t? What happens when you don’t know what you’re passionate about? Or you don’t know what you want to study for the next four years of your life? Do you go to college and hope that you’ll find your niche and risk the chance that you’ll be unhappy with thousands of dollars in student loans?

I’m here to let you know that it’s okay to take your time. It’s okay for you to take a year off from education before jumping into college, heck — that’s what I did.

What’s the college plan?

Throughout high school, counselors and teachers push the idea that the only way to be successful is to go to college. While I do agree that a college education makes your job hunt easier, it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into. College is a big deal, as well as a big expense as you enter adulthood.

If you’re unsure of what college you want to go to or what you want to major in, don’t rush the start of your college career. If you’re still in high school, I recommend taking the time to think about the subjects, hobbies, and extracurriculars that you actually ENJOY. I emphasize ‘enjoy’ because I quickly realized that the courses I excelled in were not always the courses I enjoyed the most. I didn’t take into account the things that I was interested in doing outside of school or outside the required coursework.

No matter where you are in life, taking a career aptitude test can help point you in the right direction. When you get the results, take some time to explore them! Look up a YouTube video, hashtag, or find a few Instagram accounts that relate to your top recommendations. Although you might have known of some resources that are available, you should use them sooner rather than later. Finding something that you’re passionate about is so important when it comes to having a fulfilling education and career!

Finding Success

Being offered the internship position with ENX2 Marketing was really exciting! As a digital design major and a marketing minor, I am excited to learn the ins and outs of how content succeeds on social platforms. Being able to design content that ultimately influences someone to do something plays a huge role in the success of marketing. Both of these skills are valuable as small and large businesses begin creating their social media presence.

Although I’m just starting my senior year, I’m thrilled I took the time to figure out what I would be happy doing every day after it’s over. There were always opportunities, but now I’m more willing to pursue them!
