Tomorrow I hit a milestone birthday (or as my father calls it, the anniversary of my birth). I become the big 4-0. Oh the horror, oh the pain. This number has been plaguing my mind since I turned 35 but I got to say, I’m not dreading my 40s. When I was much younger and much more naive, I felt that 40 was it. Everything came to a stop. You reached your peak and it’s all downhill from here. After all, that’s what they say, isn’t it?
Boy, was I wrong. The uphill battle was way worse. When I was in my 20s, I made bad decisions and faced crippling debt. In my 30s, I had health issues and an unwanted (yet not unexpected) change in my career. So I think my 40s will be a time where I finally find some stability in my life. But you never know, especially with my luck.
As I reach what may be the midway point of my life (though I plan to live forever, so I’m just guessing here), I do what many people may do at my age — take stock of my life. What have I done to this point? What were the good parts and the bad parts? Did I learn everything there is to know? Can I still grow as a person? And you know what I’ve discovered? I’ve got a lot of growing still left to go, baby. I’m not done yet. I still have plans and dreams that I want to accomplish. But enough about me.
Taking stock is something that all business owners should do on a regular basis. Has your business achieved the goals it set out to do? Do you feel that the future is looking bright? Or is everything downhill from here? It’s always good to know where you stand in business. If you think your business is on the right track, that’s great…but maybe you can go farther. If you think your business has taken a turn for the worse? Then it’s time to pull up your sleeves and get back on track.
The thing to remember is that no matter what age you or your business is, there’s always room to grow. Even if your business has been around for more than 50 years and there’s no way to go further, you’re wrong. There’s always growth potential for everyone. Don’t stop. Keep going. The best is yet to come.
