Before reading this article, do us a favor. Go over to a law directory that you’re on or visit your social media and take a look at the photograph you chose. Does it have any of the following:
- A background that features a bookcase or just blank screen that professional portrait photographers use
- Your arms crossed in front of you like you just took over the world
- A grim look on your face that tells the world how aggressive you are or
- A nice yet extremely stiff smile that shows you you’re such a good guy, why not hire you?
We’ve noticed that this seems to be the favorite positions of lawyers in headshots. Don’t believe us? Do a random search on Google for “lawyer headshots” and we guarantee that half the pictures will have lawyers with their arms crossed, a satisfied look on their face, with possibly a bookcase in the background. It’s true what they say about photos speaking a thousand words and do you know what those photos say to us?
“I’m just like every other lawyer out there.”
We understand the message you’re trying to get across. You want to be tough but accessible to clients. You want to show how knowledgeable you are in your chosen field. And lastly, you want to get the picture done with as soon as possible. But in order to stand out in an industry that is overfilled with individuals just like you, you may want to change up the same old headshot that everyone is using. It’s a risk, but one that may pay off. Remember, your picture will be used as a representation of you online. So go a little creative.
How? Here are a couple of suggestions:
Get out of the office. Ditch that bookcase and blank screen! There are so many other backdrops you can use, ones that will help you. How? Well, let’s take this lawyer right here. He’s a personal injury lawyer that handles construction site accidents. Just to shake up his image a bit, we took him out of the office and got a photo of him in a construction zone. This picture helped his practice tremendously and now the phone won’t stop ringing!- Let’s see a real smile. Yes, we understand, you need to be ruthless in the courtroom. But it’s nice to see a softer side of you, one that a client can relate to and know that this is the type of lawyer you can tell your troubles to. So maybe instead of a grim looking face, why not a laughing smile? Whatever looks natural on your face is the best that will look in the photo. But don’t go too crazy. Stay as professional as you can.
- Loosen up. Body language says so much and a standing person with crossed arms can mean a very closed person. You want to show that you are open and ready to fight for your clients. If you’re not sure what to do with your arms, maybe you can hold an object, like one of your books from that bookcase.
